Outteridge/Jensen take first race of 420 Australian Championships

420 Australian Championships - Outteridge/Jensen take first race of 420 Australian Championships
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA-(30-12-2003) In light 8-10 knot breezes at 130 degrees, the pair sailed the course off Mornington in 49mins 14secs to finish six seconds clear of second placegetters, Loic Bacquier/Yannick Oeduzzi (FRA), with a further three seconds to another French pairing of Gwennaig Runavot/Sylvain Leboeuf.

Outteridge is sailing the series without his winning World championship partner, Ayden Menzies, as Menzies is too old to qualify for the World title that is up for grabs in January.

Nathan Wilmot/Malcolm Page, currently World Ranked 1 in the 470 class, are in 11th place overall, competing in this series to put themselves in a pressure situation. Wilmot’s younger brother, Jeremy, is also sailing the series with his crew David Stevens and is better placed in 17th overall.

In the Open Womens fleet, Stafania Favretto/Francesca Mocnik (ITA) lead Natalia Oliveira/Gabriela Biekarck (BRA) and Emmanuelle Rol/Anne-Sophie Thil (SUI). The best placed Australian Women are Phoebe Smith/Julia Patterson in 20th place.

In all 122 boats are contesting the National Championship which is being sailed out of Mornington Yacht Club on Victoria’s peninsula. The top 14 Australian entries from the Open and Womens groups will each qualify for the World Championship, whilst the top seven from each other Nation will go through.

The six-race series continues on Trapezium courses today, with organizers hoping to sail two races.
