420 World Championship - Battling the Breeze at the 420’s! |
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA-(10-1-2004) After yesterday when the winds were more than kind but old Neptune threw up too much chop for comfort, there were high hopes for the 420 Worlds skippers and crew as they gathered for breakfast. The pressure was good and the forecast promised 15 to 20 knots from the north west turning more southerly in the afternoon. Well the forecast was right on target but for one small error in its prediction, that being wind strength.
The waves had dropped but there were a few white caps when the launch hooter sounded the Teams scrambled to get the 100 plus boats onto the water. After that it got steadily quieter and the wind shifts made for some very unpredictable sailing angles to reach the marks.
We have said it before that those that can read the lighter wind shift earn their stripes but today Huey did no favours to anyone. The breeze settled in below 10 knots and swung like a hammock. In any World Series you can only hope for perfect conditions and more often than not they fail to appear. However, we hoped that things would be a little kinder in the wind department not only for the Teams but for those that needed to constantly change the marks. Sadly an out and out effort was required by the race marshals in course setting. Under the conditions that presented themselves, everyone did an great job. With the last day being tomorrow, Sunday, we can only hope that the front due to pass through tonight delivers more predictable pressure not only in terms of direction but also in wind strength.
The final day’s racing will cover three races and with only five points separating silver, bronze and fourth place, no doubt there is going to be some serious Team analysis tonight. In the Ladie's Regatta, the British Team are doing very well being currently in Silver and Bronze positions and there are only 2 points between them.
In the spirit of true competition, it is worth noting that Croatia, who only have one boat in the regatta and thus represent all the aspirations of their country are currently seventeenth. It can be pretty lonely as a solo team so congratulations to them for their efforts to date.
