Tornado World Championship 2002 - Day 2 report of Tornado Worlds |
MARTHA`S VINYARD-(24-9-2002) The day began again with rain, but no thunderstorms and definitely plenty of wind. Prior to the harbor start, the Race Committee reported 19 knots with gusts as high as 24 knots. As the rain showers abated and the fleet headed out to the racing area, the NNE breeze moderated to 16 knots. Sea conditions were 2-3 feet and choppy.
In Race 1, the 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists, Roman Hagara/Hans-Peter Steinacher worked through the fleet quickly and lead to the finish. The 2000 Olympic Silver Medallists, Darren Bundock/John Forbes took second place. 2002 European Champions Olivier Backes/Laurent Voiron placed third. Martin Strandberg/Christian Mattson of Sweden and Xavier Revil/Laurent Guillemette rounded out the top 5.
At the start of Race 2, the wind had freshened. Throughout the race the breeze ranged between 16 - 20 knots. The increase in velocity was enough to let several other top crews show their strengths in this very competitive fleet. Mitch Booth/Herbert Dercksen led most of the way and took the win. Lars Guck / John Farrar pressed the leaders hard and took second place. The very consistent Backes/Voiron team took third and their countrymen Revil/Guillemette took fifth place. The current Texel Race champiosns, Sven Karsenbarg/Mischa Heemskerk took fourth.
At the end of 2 Races, the Top 10 are: 1. BACKES / VOIRON 2. BUNDOCK / FORBES 3. STRANDBERG / MATTSON 4. HAGARA / STEINACHER 5. BOOTH / DERCKSEN 6. REVIL / GUILLEMETTE 7. GUICHARD / ESPAGNON 8. KARSENBARG / HEEMSKERK 9. KIRILYUK / USHKOV 10. GUCK / FARRAR
