BEIJING, CHINA-(29-11-2005) Ground has been broken in Beijing, as the construction of a new media village gets underway ahead of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008. The new media village will be located outside the north fifth ring road of Beijing and will be to the northeast of the Olympic Green and the Olympic Forest Park. 6,000 Rooms The media village will cover an area of 630,000 square metres and will provide up to 6,000 rooms to accredited media during the Olympic Games. The village is just five kilometres, or about 10 minutes’ drive, from the major Olympic competition venues and the Main Press Centre (MPC). New Technology The media village will take advantage of new technologies and green concepts in its design and construction. The project is expected to take advantage of geothermal and solar energy, green construction materials and have a rain water recycling system. Other Media Accommodation With about 20,000 media representatives expected to cover the Beijing Games, the Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 (BOCOG) has also identified other accommodation possibilities for the media. These will include two other existing facilities that will be used as media villages and which will provide another 2,500 rooms, as well as 46 Beijing hotels, so far, that will be designated media hotels and will provide another 15,000 rooms. These facilities have been selected on a number of criteria, with a major priority being quick access to the MPC and major competition venues. BEIJING 2008 The Games of the XXIX Olympiad - Beijing 2008, will take place from 8 to 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to 28 sports, with approximately 10,500 athletes expected to participate, and around 20,000 accredited media on site, ready to bring the Games to the world.
