First day`s finals sees light and shifty winds at Europe Class Worlds

Europe Class World Championship 2002 - First day`s finals sees light and shifty winds at Europe Class Worlds
HAMILTON, CANADA-(3-9-2002) In very light and shifty conditions, the first day of the finals of the Europe world championships saw many of the top sailors come to grief as the wind pressure varied from one side of the course to another.

It was a game of snakes and ladders out on Hamilton harbour as the best female Europe sailors in the world battled it out in the tricky conditions.

Sarah Blanck (AUS) continues to lead the class, although she also had to cope in the tricky conditions and scored her worst results of the regatta so far, a sixth and a 26th. Despite these results Blanck still has a ten-point lead over Petra Niemann (GER)

There are two more races left to be sailed today to complete the series at the Europe world championship, the points are tight and racing is guaranteed to be close going into the final races, to determine who will take home the gold medal.

The weather forcecast today is for moderate southerlies of up to 15 knots, decreasing as the day progresses.

In the men's fleet it's tough at the top. Only four points separate the top three going into the final day with Gerard Marin (ESP) leading the pack, who all have a fairly good cushion from the boats behind.
