GAETA, ITALY-(25-4-2004) The Star keelboat World Championship commences racing tomorrow in Gaeta, Italy. It is the final Olympic qualification regatta for the Star keelboat, with kiwi pair Rohan Lord and Andrew Taylor aiming to qualify the Star class for New Zealand.
12 nations have qualified for the 2004 Olympic’s so far, with a further four nations having the opportunity to qualify based on their results at these Worlds.
Kiwi duo, Lord and Taylor, paired up to sail in the Star Class last year. Lord is a top New Zealand Laser sailor and Taylor is a highly acclaimed America’s Cup sailor, having been a key member in New Zealand’s 1995 and 2000 America’s Cup winning team.
This is a six race regatta and contains some of the very best Star Class sailors, including Paul Cayard, a veteran America’s Cup sailor who is the Star representative for USA at the 2004 Olympic’s.
There are 118 entries at these Worlds, with 30 nations present. Racing starts tomorrow and concludes May 2nd.
