| BEIJING, CHINA-(22-9-2005) When construction begins on the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium at the end of September 2005, all 11 of the new competition venues that Beijing plans to build for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will be under construction. Based on the principles of “safety, quality, construction time limit, function and cost”, a great deal of progress has been made on the Olympic venues according to officials from the Beijing 2008 Project Construction Headquarters Office.
Four Factors
In order to optimise and fine-tune the layout and design of the Olympic venues, the Beijing Municipality has taken into consideration four factors. These factors are: 1) to ensure that the optimisation and fine-tuning corresponds to the needs of the Olympic Games; 2) that the legacy use of these venues for Beijing residents is ensured; 3) that use of any existing facilities is maximised; and 4) to use as many temporary venues as possible in order to avoid building unnecessary facilities.
31 Venues
Of the 31 competition venues that will be used for the 26 Olympic sports to be held in Beijing, 11 are new venues, 11 will require renovation or expansion and 9 are temporary. In addition, 41 training venues and five other facilities that are directly related to the Games will also be needed. Moreover, the areas surrounding the venues will also be improved before the Games.
BEIJING 2008
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 August 2008 until 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.
