Battle for the Olympic 470 Class Worlds Title starts in heavy conditions

470 World Championships - Battle for the Olympic 470 Class Worlds Title starts in heavy conditions
SAN FRANCISCO, CA. USA-(22-8-2005) Yesterday, the measurement inspections and the registration finished and the Opening Ceremony was held, chaired by the Commodore of the St Francis Yacht Club, Doug Holm. ISAF was represented by its Vice-President David Irish, and 470 Internationale by its Secretary General Alain Corcuff, who declared the 2005 470 Class World Championships open.

34 Women's crews and 64 Men's crews, representing 29 nations from the five continents have begun to compete today. Women have entered directly the Championship as a whole fleet, whereas the qualifying phase for Men, distributed into two groups, will last for three days.

Today racing has been extremely difficult due to windshifts and a strong current within the racing area.

On the Women's fleet the Dutch crew Marcelien de Koning - Lobke Berkhout have won the two races. Winners of the Men's group races have been the French Gildas Philippe - Nicolas Le Berre, the Croatian Sime Fantela - Igor Marenic, the Australians Mattew Belcher - Nick Behrens and Nathan Wilmot and Malcom Page. The overall scoring of the Men's fleet over two races is headed by Nathan Wilmot and Malcom Page who have finished the races second then first.
